Growing Involvement of Public and Private Entities to Treat Lymphedema to Offer Opportunities for India Lymphedema Treatment Market During 2022–2030
Various government organizations and companies operating in the lymphedema market constantly focus on strategic developments such as collaborations, expansions, agreements, partnerships, and product launches. These help them improve their sales, expand their geographic reach, and enhance their capacities to cater to a greater than existing customer base. A few of the noteworthy developments in the lymphedema market are mentioned below:
On July 16, 2021, Sakra World Hospital launched a ‘Comprehensive Lymphedema Care Centre’ on the occasion of World Plastic Surgery. This newly launched center will be equipped with the latest technologies in diagnostics and offer treatment by a team of internationally certified lymphedema specialists, including plastic surgeons, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, and clinical nutritionists. Sakra Comprehensive Lymphedema Care Centre will offer services such as ICG-based real-time lymphedema scan, lymphovenous bypass surgery (LVA), lymph node transfer surgery, lymphedema reduction surgery and conservative treatment (Lymphedema rehabilitation).
In November 2021, Anatomech, a Pune-based start-up, launched Kue, a brand of compression socks. The sales rose steadily as soon as it was launched, indicating a heavy demand. Anatomech is developing a daily-wear, portable sleeve that enables continuous lymphatic decongestion for 10–12 hours for patients suffering from lymphedema—a surgical consequence that follows mastectomy or other aggressive surgeries.
The socks, which enhance oxygen delivery and muscle recovery while reducing spasms and cramps in the legs, are a part of the wearable technology products that Anatomech has been working on since 2020. In September, Anatomech was one of the runners-up at the Pune round of the TiE Women’s Global Pitch Competition, which featured 58 women-initiated companies.
As per a news published in Open Digest on September 2023, the Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) in Kerala is exploring a tie-up with Indian start-ups to make cost-effective compression bandages to make lymphedema and lymphatic filariasis treatment more affordable for millions of patients, which are a key element in treatment. The compression bandages used for the treatment are considerably expensive. India has all the required natural resources, such as latex and cotton, to make compression bandages but still has to depend heavily on global suppliers for quality compression bandages. Thus, IAD is ready to collaborate with tech start-ups for necessary guidance to develop compression bandages.
Such developments in lymphedema treatment by Indian companies are expected to offer lucrative opportunities to the market.
India Lymphedema Treatment Market: Segmental Overview
Based on treatment type, the India lymphedema treatment market is segmented into compression devices and bandaging, drug therapy, physiological procedure, debulking procedure, and others. The physiological procedures segment is further segmented into lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA) and vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT). The debulking procedures segment is sub-segmented into liposuction, surgical debulking, and others. The compression devices and bandaging segment held the largest share of the market in 2022. The physiological procedure segment is expected to register the highest CAGR in the market during 2022–2030. This is mainly due to the appropriate treatment procedures performed on lymphedema patients through LVA and VLNT. These two procedures are appropriate treatment options for patients suffering from lymphedema. Surgical techniques of lymphedema management are split into two parts: physiologic therapy and ablative therapy. Physiologic surgical techniques are microsurgical procedures fostering the physiologic drainage of lymphatic fluid through the anastomosis of lymphatic vessels with the venous system or incorporating a functional lymph node in the region of ablative treatment. According to the NCBI report, physiologic procedures are most effective in the early stages of lymphedema; adding ablative therapy can also render them effective therapeutic options for late-stage lymphedema.
